TRANSFER
The most frequent question we get is "How much will it cost?"
There are a couple different calculations you will need to do to figure the cost.
The first calculation is for telecine charges. Telecine charges are the amount you will pay for the colorist to load your film on the telecine and make the appropriate corrections and record the film to media.
Telecine charges are calculated by multiplying the running time of the film by the "transfer ratio" then multiplying that number by the hourly rate, which is $600/hr for SD, $800/hr for HD.
We offer a "stand-by rate" for those that can be flexible with when the transfer is done, and do not need to supervise the transfer. "Stand-by rates" are $400/hr for HD, and $300/hr for SD.
You can use the Kodak Footage Calculator to determine the running time.
The transfer ratio for a one-light transfer is generally 2:1.
The transfer ratio for a scene to scene transfer is generally 3:1 or 4:1.
If you are having your film transfered to tape then all you need to do is add in the cost of the tape and you will have a good idea what your transfer should cost.
Telecine Charges = (Running time) (ratio) x Rate
TRANSFER TO DRIVE
Capture charges are calculated by adding the running time of the film to the time required to transfer the capture from our drive to yours, and 15mins for data management.
The rate is $250 per hour of capture / file management, in addition to the telecine charge.
We do offer a standby rate of $125/hr.
There is a 1 hour minimum charge for captures.
The capture file size can be determined by using the AJA Data Rate calculator.(Mac link PC link)
A Firewire 800 drive will result in a data transfer rate of about 3GB per minute.
Firewire 400 is about half that, and USB 2.0 is just under 1GB per minute.
Capture Charges = Running time + data transfer time +15mins data management.
If you are transferring to drive there is a charge for both the film scanning and the capture time.
HOW RATES AND SCHEDULES WORK
We offer a discounted rate based upon scheduling flexibility.
We refer to this as our “stand-by” rate, which is 50% off our regular rates.
The "stand-by" rate allows us to fit the transfer into our schedule where it works best for us to be able to give the job the same professional attention and craftsmanship that a scheduled transfer receives.
We do not give less attention to quality and craftsmanship based upon the transfer rate, and we think the clips below demonstrate this.
The rate for the “stand-by” transfer is lower, the quality of the transfer and the level of professionalism are not.
